It Isn’t Easy Being Green – Freelance Sites, Tools of the Trade Series

Let me start by saying, green has never been my favorite color. Yes, I know there are some really nice shades of green, such as Christmas Green, Kelly green, and maybe Emerald green, but still I tend to head towards Blues or yellows. So, when I first visited the website, www.freelancefree.com the three different shades of green were somewhat distracting to me. I had to keep opening this website to see if the “next” time I opened it I would see something that appealed to me. Granted, a job would appeal to me, but something has to attract me before that and I can’t honestly say that anything on this website did. Appearance aside, there are some good points to this website.
The fonts are larger than normal, so for those who need glasses, this website allows reading without squinting, nice on those days where you misplace your glasses and don’t want to take the time to find them. The format of the website is relatively simple. There aren’t many tabs to navigate or sections to search, just a simple Webmaster section and Freelancer section. The job listings remind me of an excel spreadsheet without the lines and with a filler color I wouldn’t choose, but then we established my opinion on green so… There are headings which list the Project Name, Job Type, (number of) Bids, Status and Start Date. The projects are listed by Start Date, but not in any other kind of order. When you click on a particular project, it takes you to the description of the job, the budget, the buyer and when the bid expires. While the information is still in a type of box form they have added a beige-gold filler color, yea! Under that box, there is a little gray box which gives the freelancer a chance to bid on that job. Once you click, a freelancer’s username, you are taken to their profile and again a little gray box appears that the buyer can use to select the freelancer for his/her project. It is a very easy process; it doesn’t look as professional as other sites I’ve visited, but simple, none the less.
You are required to sign up before you bid or post a job, but you can check out the open jobs just by going to search. There is not a search available by category, so unless you know the keyword you want to use, it’s hit or miss. The search allows you to view open, frozen or closed jobs. There was a big list of frozen jobs; they are waiting for buyer response, wonder how long that could take! There were jobs posted even today, so jobs are being added on a regular basis, which is always a good thing!
Color preference aside, this is a good website for someone looking for a freelance job. There are, in addition, a few resource articles to help in copyrighting, business writing and design. So all in all, a website that you should at least check out and see if you like. JUST BE PREPARED FOR THE GREEN!
Freelancing is my life. It's what I know, it's what I'm good at, and I can't imagine doing anything else. You can call me "Freddie the Freelancer"… because I'd prefer not to use my real name for reasons that I'll tell you about in a moment.
