Facebook:  Number One for Social Fun!

Last week we showed you our top 5 Social Networking Sites that can be used for marketing yourself online.  This week we will take a closer look into the number one site: Facebook.  If one were to evaluate a social networking site the following criteria could be used:

1)  Profiles: This is the starting point for your presence!  Designed by you, this is a place where you can most deeply express your passion for the brand, company or product you wish to promote.  By taking advantage of the personal and work information, photos, videos, and applications available here you can literally narrate your story as it relates to your product.  In the profile page of Facebook, you can use the “status” option (much like Twitter) to update what you are doing each day. On the left sidebar of the profile page there is plenty of space to enter more specific information.  You can also share web sites and blogs you are currently participating in on this left sidebar.

2)  Security:  The internet is a very dangerous place when it comes to sharing your personal information.  Be sure that you know the site’s security policy and private information procedures before participation.  Facebook is constantly striving to update their security and vows not to sell your information to 3rd party affiliates unless first approved by the user.

3)  Networking Features: It takes more than just a personal profile to ensure success with a social networking site.  Facebook is on the leading edge of networking features including groups, music sections, video uploads and more.  The use of groups can really allow you to get the word out about your product or brand, share information with others that have similar interests, and provide you with free marketing around the world!

4)  Friend Focus: The whole point of using a social networking site is to keep in touch with your family, friends or colleagues.  The site must adhere to keeping your personal information private enough that only people you approve of can find you.  Facebook, for example, has search engines that can be broken down into a specific geographic area, a school district, a city or state, etc.  You have complete control over who can “find’ you.

Once you are registered with Facebook take some time to really consider the message you want to send out, who you want to reach, and who will be able to reach you.  Use the resources they have to offer and you will be able to market yourself with the newest leading edge technology.  And best of all, it is all for free!
