Periodically we need to sit back and do a little self assessment. Review our progress and advancement. Are we, professionally, where we want to be at this time in our life? Have we met the goals we’ve set? Is our business plan on track?

As we ask ourselves these questions, we must remember to pay attention to the answers. This is how we take control of our career and gain success in our chosen field. Often times it is so easy to get caught up in the day- to- day mechanics of the freelancing ebb and flow. When times are good, we are focused on the tasks at hand. When times are slow, we focus on making them better. Being successful as a freelancer isn’t that cut and dried; you are the sole source of how successful your business is going to be. So it stands to reason that time to time evaluation of your performance is needed. Many of us can be overly critical, or empathetic of our own work. No need to worry.

Along with your own opinion, include the opinions of clients, colleagues, friends and family. Just ask them… How am I doing? It is a simple question and can show you some important points. It will allow you to recognize your assets and positive features and it will also show you certain areas that may need improvement. So how is this done?
• If your freelancing is done on the internet, where face to face contact does not happen, include a feedback section on your forms. This will allow you to get an immediate response to the current task and allow you to make adjustments, if needed, for future tasks. It will also serve as a wonderful confidence builder when you receive positive compliments.

• Should you receive a comment in the ‘constructive criticism’ family, respond quickly to the feedback. Ask for suggestions on what you can do better for them the next time. Don’t take offense to non positive responses. Remember, you asked and it will only better you to listen.

• Face to face interaction allows you to personally ask the big question – in person. Many people need that specific inquiry before telling you what may or may not have impressed them. Finishing up a project with that instant evaluation from your client, will show them your dedication to your field and implant in them the confidence to work with you again. Even if they may have had a somewhat unpleasant response to your question.

So remember; How am I doing? And watch your business grow.
