Talented and Fresh Bloggers

DESCRIPTION:

Nerve is seeking writers for our main blog, Scanner. Nerve is a sex, love and culture website writing about the lives of our young and educated readership. We produce a wide variety of original content and and receive close to two million unique visitors each month.

We are looking for talented writers with fresh, compelling voices and interesting opinions. You should be interested in the world of pop culture – movies, music and TV – but also Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the culture of the web itself. Our bloggers write multiple times per day on set schedules between nine and five every day, Monday-Friday, and so writers either need to be full-time freelancers, students or otherwise free for a serious, regular time commitment during business hours.

Scanner is Nerve’s most prolific and dynamic blog, and a major source of traffic for the site. Scanner’s mission is to profile the lively and rapidly changing landscape of the our online world, and find interesting, unique ways to post about it. Our goal is to be enthusiastic and celebratory about the things we do like, but willing able to intelligently critique those things that we find annoying, wrong-headed, or just plain stupid. Scanner is first and foremost a pop-culture blog, with interest in expanding to news and beyond. Analyzing and critiquing week-to-week television (moments worth talking about, short Scanner recaps of specific shows, interesting/provoking commercials), internet culture (i.e. viral videos, memes, new and up-and-coming sites), and ephemera that would be missed by Nerve proper (new music videos, new movie trailers). Our coverage of pop-culture aims to be intelligent and classy (no “Look how fat she’s getting” posts, no “Brangelina”). Most importantly, posts should have an opinion, an argument or a point-of-view. It’s good to know that there’s an insane new Wal-Mart commercial out there, but what we really want is to know what you think about it.

The position pays per post with extra incentives for traffic goals. We would start slow, but hope to eventually have a blogger who could blog four or five times every weekday.

Spend some time reading Scanner to get a sense our voice and sensibility, and then draft three sample posts that you think would be a good fit for the blog. Include headlines and any photos ,links or videos you’d imagine as part of the post. Keeping up with current phenomena is a big part of what we do, so make sure all posts are relevant to the day you post – if you submit your application on Thursday, choose three things that would have been timely that Thursday. The subject of the posts is of your choosing, but keep it within the topics and tone you ordinarily see on the blog.

Please also include a resume or a quick list of other relevant work experience. However, the decision will be based almost exclusively on the quality of the writing samples, so that should be your priority.
