Video Uploader Application Developer
DESCRIPTION:
I manage a health site that is used for training and watching videos online is a key part of the site. Each video is associated with a family (group) and session (one part of the group). I need a video uploader program that will allow users to select DVD (unencrypted) or video files from their computer or a hard drive camcorder. Once the user selects a file, the program will transcode it to Flash using Handbrake or ffmpeg (or something else if you have a better idea!) then upload it to the server. Preferably Mac compatible, but it definitely needs to be Windows 7, Vista, and XP compatible. I was thinking of AIR but that won’t work so either C# or Java.
REQUIREMENTS:
Here is how I would like the layout to be (and it needs to look great visually as well!)
- Use a wizard format for the user to select the family and session first. This will also give a link to the home page to add a family or session.
- The program will communicate back to the server via an API to verify that the family and session combo actually exists — this is really important to keep people from selecting the wrong combination.
- Next the user would select DVD or harddrive camcorder.
- If DVD, the program will ask the user to select a DVD drive.
- If the user selects a DVD the program MUST ask the user which titles/chapters to include. Some people may need only certain titles uploaded.
- If hard drive or memory card, the program will ask for a file name.
- When the video is selected the user will see a preview window with play, stop, fast forward, and rewind buttons — Windows Media Player is probably fine.
- The user can add more files if needed by repeating the steps.
- Finally, the user will see a large “Start Processing” button at the bottom of the screen.
- The bottom will also contain a status bar with info like total elapsed processing time, total videos transcoded, total videos to transcode, total videos uploaded, videos to upload.
- The status bar will also run a speed test to guestimate the user’s upload connection and will report back the estimated total upload time.
- Now for the actual work…the program will convert each video format into a FLV file and SAVE it to My Documents or somewhere similar.
- Only when the server returns an upload okay status will the program delete the FLV file.
- Once uploaded the program will give a link to the video.
- Any error messages will be logged.
- The program will have an option to upload log file in XML to the server for me to analyze.
- All interaction with the server such as API call URIs, allowed file types, etc. should be in a config file that I can easily change.
- The source code which will become our property MUST be readable and well documented so I can go and change any settings when needed.

Freelancing is my life. It's what I know, it's what I'm good at, and I can't imagine doing anything else. You can call me "Freddie the Freelancer"… because I'd prefer not to use my real name for reasons that I'll tell you about in a moment.
