Discovery Communications
DESCRIPTION:
HowStuffWorks.com, a wholly owned subsidiary of Discovery Communications, is the award-winning source of credible, unbiased and easy-to-understand explanations of how the world actually works. Founded in 1998, the site is now an online resource for millions of people of all ages.
We are seeking experienced freelance writers to contribute original material to HowStuffWorks.com and other Discovery Digital Media sites on an as-needed, project-by-project basis. Writers who are used to working under the auspices of editors and receiving guidance, feedback and constructive criticism are strongly preferred. We are particularly interested in both generalists with exceptional research skills and specialists who are comfortable writing outside their fields.
Freelancers must be able to handle assignments on a typical turnaround of one to two weeks and must reliably meet deadlines. Strong research and writing skills are required. HowStuffWorks.com freelance writers must also be able to break down complex subjects and explain difficult concepts in clear, simple language that is also engaging and entertaining. Articles are written in a style and voice specified by HowStuffWorks.com staff, and to be accepted, articles must follow all provided specifications. All work must also be accurate and 100 percent original. Decisions to reject articles for originality concerns are final.
Interested applicants should apply via e-mail by sending a resume and two relevant nonfiction samples to freelance -at- howstuffworks -dot- com. As the body of the e-mail, please compose a cover letter explaining reasons for interest in writing for HowStuffWorks and qualifications for the role. Please title the e-mail “Freelance Writer: [Fields of Expertise],” as in “Freelance Writer: Generalist” or “Freelance Writer: Tech.” While you are welcome to provide links to an online portfolio, also select and send two samples you believe best represent your work. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines may not be received or considered.
Freelancers must sign a contribution agreement, which details terms and payment, before beginning work. As independent contractors, freelancers are not employees of HowStuffWorks.com or Discovery Communications and are not eligible for benefits. Unfortunately, we cannot respond to all applicants personally, and we cannot return writing samples. No phone calls or office visits, please.

Freelancing is my life. It's what I know, it's what I'm good at, and I can't imagine doing anything else. You can call me "Freddie the Freelancer"… because I'd prefer not to use my real name for reasons that I'll tell you about in a moment.
