Freelance Proofreader/Final Reader
DESCRIPTION:
University Readers is taking the custom-publishing industry by storm! Join an entrepreneurial company that provides an E-commerce publishing service that is loved by countless professors and over 250,000 students around the country. This is an incredible opportunity for the right individual, as we are positioned to triple in size over the next few years.
We are presently recruiting for enthusiastic, hard-working, and dedicated Freelance Final Readers to work from home. In this role, you will provide the “nuts-and-bolts” of our publishing service: making sure that our textbooks are consistently formatted and error-free.
Responsibilities:
- Receive laid-out book interiors in PDF format and original source material in PDF or Word format.
- Read the book ALL text for accuracy and consistency: This includes checking for misplaced words, incorrect characters, missing words/pages, and other inconsistencies/typos.
- Review the book interior PDF against the originals for accuracy as needed.
- Ensure that all house style preferences are correctly applied throughout the text.
- NO line-editing/copy-editing involved.
- Create itemized list of any typos/errors/inconsistencies.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Publishing experience
- Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail are strongly encouraged to apply.
- InDesign or Adobe Acrobat Professional software will greatly aid in the timely completion of this work. Please note if you have either of these packages.
Qualifications:
- Adept with personal computers, standard word processing and ms office (Word, Adobe Acrobat on your computer are required for the work).
- Familiarity with the book-publishing process: layout, design, editorial, production, scheduling, printing, epub knowledge a plus.
- Ability to ensure a flawless product and maintain the flawless standard quality control across a high volume of titles. This requires a keen eye and exacting standards. This is supported and reinforced by using a repeatable, documented, and continually updated (as needed, in writing) process.
- Ability to receive constructive criticism and feedback, and incorporating it into future work as needed to ensure the highest quality is maintained.
- Strong, demonstrated organizational skills. We have a high-pressure, quick-turnaround operation, and your ability to multi-task and hit strict deadlines must be second-to-none!
- Ability to work efficiently and productively on an independent basis. At the same time, candidate must be able to work cooperatively to help company meet larger goals and objectives (we are extremely interdependent and regularly collaborate).
- A drive to seek excellence with a “whatever-it-takes” attitude (you love to work hard and take pride in a job well-done)!
We’re asking interested applicants to complete the short Final Read test we’ve prepared. Test files are available via the weblink. http://digital.universityreaders.com/temp/80065-1_Test.zip.
Please read the Final Read Instructions first and then commence the test (ignore references to a TOC: you do not have a Table of Contents to refer to). The instructions will show you how to create a list of corrections. Return the Word file with your corrections as an email attachment. Based on your performance on the test, we may extend an offer of employment on a freelance basis. A signed Consultant Agreement is required. Final Read assignments are paid a flat fee based on project page count and our available budget. Each fee is arranged at the time of initial work assignment. The pay scale is below:

- 201 – 250 $75
- 251 – 350 $100
- 351 – 450 $125
- 451 – 550 $150
- 551 – 650 $175
- 651 – 750 $200
- 751 – 850 $225
- 851 – 950 $250
Project turnaround times will depend on page length and your availability. Development Director
DESCRIPTION:
InTheFray Magazine seeks a trainee to help out with researching and writing applications for grants. The Development Director will responsible for researching grants and writing grant proposals for InTheFray as well as advising the Board and Marketing Director on grant funding and donor status.
Additional responsibilities will include:
- Update and maintain donor database.
- Manage donor communications (i.e. thank-you notes, donor gifts, etc) and serve as the key contact for donor information and service.
- Help with donor drive, donor newsletter, and other fundraising projects.
- Attend staff meetings in person or via phone to discuss planning, donor updates, and ITF events
We will provide the necessary training; what we’re looking for is someone who has good writing and research skills. This position may be a good fit for a freelancer who wants to learn an additional set of skills, or a recent graduate who is interested in aiding in the growth of a nonprofit publication. The Development Director will be expected to attend staff meetings in person or via phone and help occasionally with other projects.
