Django developer

DESCRIPTION:

We need to hire a Django developer on a part-time basis. The rate we are looking at is $45-$85/hr. We realize this is not for everybody, so if you normally charge $150/hr and you’re revving up a big “no one values my work” rant hold on to it for now, we aren’t looking for someone like you… yet.

Still interested? Great. We are a start up company building an application that eliminates several nasty internal communication problems. We make money by charging people for our product. In fact we have clients offering money to be a part of the beta. To say there’s interest in the product is an understatement.

The team is currently two people: Aaron Marshall and David Yeiser – business development/sales and interface design/development respectively. You would be responsible for implementing the technology and programming that will power the product as directed.

We already have a working product that is built with Django and housed on a Slicehost slice. The full stack includes:

  • Django trunk
  • PostgreSQL
  • Apache/mod_wsgi
  • Linux

REQUIREMENTS:

  • APIs (both creating and integrating 3rd parties).
  • Database optimization and scalability.
  • Optimizing the site for speed.
  • General security, SSL/data encryption (no Firesheep!).
  • Secure payment integration. We need to charge people and get them set up on a monthly payment plan when they register for an account.
  • AJAX creating, editing, updating and deleting for model objects.
  • Managing user uploads (files/images).
  • Creating/integrating a chat module that relates to Django model objects and authenticated users and sessions.
  • Developing application modules that would be user-selected add-ons. This would include custom built modules like something that pulls all the links from a content model, as well as integrating with 3rd party apps via APIs (like a Basecamp integration module).
  • User authentication and auto-segmenting on signup, and group/sub-group setup.
  • Setting up a versioning system and a matching product and development environment.
  • Node.js (I’ll be honest, I just put that there so you’d think we’re cool. I’m not really sure what it is.)
  • Other stuff too.

You would be working closely with David who would be in charge of all the HTML/CSS and most of the jQuery though he could likely use your help with some of it. He would also be responsible for working with all the Django templates. Your main responsibility would be the models and views. (And of course you would have a say in how the template files are structured and referenced.)

Much of the application is prototyped as production-ready when it comes to the front-end, it’s just missing the back-end programming and logic. Long-term opportunities at the company are a definite possibility if it’s a good fit. (Trust me, you’ll want this when we go big and live it up on an expensive beach somewhere.)

Please include:

  • One-sentence introduction.
  • Link to your website.
  • No more than two sentences describing your experience with Django.
  • A list of any contributions you have made to the Django project.
  • One person we can call that can vouch for your skills.
