Freelance Jobs – January 4, 2011
Freelance Editor
DESCRIPTION:
We’re looking for several smart, detail-oriented editors to edit web content covering a wide variety of topics. This gig is a great, flexible way to supplement your income.
REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have:
- the ability to comfortably work on a variety of subjects (from science to home to health to manufacturing to finance) and assess the overall content and flow of an article
- exceptional proofreading skills
- the ability to professionally mentor and guide writers
- the ability to consistently meet deadlines
- the ability to apply our writing style and editing guidelines
- an excellent understanding of grammar
- at least three years of experience as a writer or editor
- an undergraduate degree (preferably in English or Journalism)
The Work in a Nutshell. A small group of writers will be assigned to you. You’ll work through our customized, online, content management system to edit the short articles (typically 400 words) that your writers submit, insert basic HTML coding, and coach writers on how to improve their writing.
Reach. Our site is visited by over 16 million visitors per month.
Flexibility. This gig is flexible. You can choose your hours and work from anywhere you have an internet connection.
Initiative and Discipline. While flexibility is a great benefit of this position, it also requires that you have the self-discipline to do a good job while maintaining timely turnaround times. You must be able to take initiative and work independently.
Time Commitment. We’ll need you to commit at least 10 hours of work per week, although that number can vary somewhat, based on how much content your assigned group of writers produce. There is, however, enough work for significantly more hours per week, if you are interested. You will have to edit daily or, at the very least, every other day.
Pay. We pay per article edited. The hourly rate generally works out to be about $15 to $20 an hour, depending on the editor’s experience and efficiency. Payment frequency is based on editor productivity but editors are typically paid once a week, or every other week.
Payment Method. We pay by PayPal, but you will have the option to switch to mailed paper checks or direct deposits after one month.
Independent Contractor. This is an independent contractor position.
US Citizens. This position is available to US citizens only.
Testing Process. We require that our applicants go through a testing process. You will be paid the normal rates for your test articles assuming they represent a good faith effort. The test has both writing and editing components; you’ll need to write nine articles and edit ten articles. We require the writing component so you know exactly what it is like for your writers.
How to Apply. If you’re interested, send an email to: editors -at- conjecture -dot- com with the two pieces of information listed below. Please include all information inline. (Attachments will not be opened.)
- a cover letter that explains your relevant experience and your interest in this position, and
- your resume
