Operations Engineer

DESCRIPTION:

Canonical is hiring an Operations Engineer to join the Ubuntu One team. Ubuntu One is a suite of personal cloud services that let people secure, sync and stream their content across multiple platforms and devices. As an Operations Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring that the service quality is at the best possible level by developing processes and tools for monitoring complex web based services, performing automated testing and performance measurements, and working with the rest of the development team to triage, prioritize, and resolve issues. You will help us scale services from small initial deployments through to millions of users. We are looking for a self-motivated Operations engineer with strong experience and track record in software development with a focus and interest in: automation, reporting, and scaling. What kids these days are calling “DevOps.”

  • Monitoring and meaningful reporting of health of large scale web service deployment
  • Diagnosing whole system problems that cross project and service ownership boundaries
  • Offer expert guidance to the team on how to further automate deployments and design systems to run in a cloud environment like Amazon EC2
  • Identify and coordinate the resolution of errors from logs and automated tool
  • Deploy automation tools for increasing test coverage and running integration and acceptance tests across all supported platforms
  • Participate in continuous code review along with the rest of the team, learning and offering constructive feedback.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong use of web, building and deploying web applications for 5 years or equivalent
  • Experience of working in the development of applications or services intended for widespread, consumer use
  • Proven track record of working in a commercial environment where you have been working as a member of a team building a significant product.
  • Management and configuration of services in Linux, with a solid grasp of web technologies, web services, and networking.
  • Experience with modern deployment tools (Puppet, Chef)
  • Ability to debug, identify and pinpoint problems in complex networked web applications (load balancers, caching servers, etc)
  • Experience with tools such as Hudson, Selenium, EC2/Eucalyptus/OpenStack is a plus.
  • Familiarity with open source and actively participating in open source projects.
  • Strong testing and development skills (python or other dynamic language).
  • Experience with packaging software (DEB or RPM) is a plus
  • Strong communication and cooperation skills
  • Ideally educated to a degree level in Computer Science or other technical field or equivalent
  • Comfortable with online communication and collaboration such as mailing lists, IRC and wikis
  • Excellent logic, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness to travel internationally, for periods of one or two weeks and occasionally longer, for developer-oriented meetings and sprints
  • Strong English communication skills, especially in email and IRC environments
