UI Designer
DESCRIPTION:
Let’s be honest here, a lot of web design these days is photocopied and boring. We’re looking for someone who’d like to go beyond that. Someone who can apply a more liberated thinking process to the web world. A giant design monster with print sensitivities and web hands.
More than anything we need someone who wants to help artists make a living doing what they love. Big Cartel is home to over 150,000 clothing designers, bands, jewelry makers, crafters, and other artists. You’d have a direct hand in creating the simple tools they use, and your work would be viewed by millions each day.
REQUIREMENTS:
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- a solid design background with an eye for details
- a skill for typography and a love for the grid
- expert in all the usual design software, aka Adobe apps
- can strangle some HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with your bare hands
- self-motivated and able to efficiently run with a project without close supervision
And a big gold star if you have:
- experience with Ruby on Rails and Git
- experience with web app and e-commerce design
- experience working remotely or on your own
- experience managing projects and teams
- a formal design education

REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of enterprise scale software development experience.
- Extensive direct experience developing, delivering and maintaining a multi-user browser-based application
- Commercial Python experience and complete command of the language
- Ability to write and read SQL, including complex joins and optimization
- Solid understanding of JavaScript fundamentals
- Solid understanding of HTML and CSS

Junior News Page Designer
DESCRIPTION:
Journatic has an immediate opening for a Junior newspaper page designer specializing in InDesign for our growing Print Production department.
You must be a technology-savvy self-starter able to meet hard print deadlines every week in a virtual newsroom that uses a browser-based CMS, InDesign CS4, Adobe PDFs and Google documents, as well as basic in-house systems. Our staff is far-flung, but Skype, Gmail and the Internet allow us to banter and interact like a regular newsroom.
You will work as part of a team of writers, editors and page designers to produce news pages for newspapers across the country. Previous news page design experience is a must – college newspaper design is good too.
REQUIREMENTS:

- Must know AP Style
- Must be able to overcome obstacles and multi-task
- Must be able to manage your time and follow deadline schedules to prioritize tasks.
- Must have the ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
