REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2+ years coding experience and top skills in acute care Inpatient and Outpatient coding

Key Requirements

  • At least 2 – 3 years LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) experience
  • SQL, particularly with MySQL

  • Experience with SEO fundamentals
  • HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript and cross-browser compatibility experience a plus
  • Some layout skill (you know how to float things, nest things, div things – you don’t use tables for layout)
  • Experience optimizing websites for scalability (we’re starting to see rapid growth, the code must scale)

Coding Specialist II – Remote

DESCRIPTION:

The coder/remote coder is responsible to apply the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing. The coder is also accountable for communication with Clinical Documentation Specialist and Medical Staff to facilitate accurate and timely documentation of hospital services and charges.

The incumbent in this position will support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public and co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Assigns ICD-9-CM and/or HCPCS codes, creating APC or MSDRG group assignments using the encoder system.
  • Abstracts pertinent information from patient records for reporting purposes.
  • Queries physician for clarification when documentation is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Meet coding productivity standard with a 98% accuracy rate (See Coding Productivity and Quality Standards).
  • Communicate effectively with Clinical Documentation Review Specialists regarding accurate documentation for the purposes of coding.
  • Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Bring identified concerns to supervisor or department manager for resolution.
  • Participate in all available continuing educational activities to improve coding skills and knowledge.
  • Communicate and document downtime to the Coding Manager.
  • Abides by HIPAA regulations and Mary Washington Healthcare confidentiality policies.
  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health.
  • Information Management Association and adheres to Official Coding Guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the department

REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credentials required.
  • Five (5) or more years coding experience.
  • Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Terminology knowledge required.
  • Able to use critical thinking skills to review and interpret patient care documentation for the purposes of coding.
  • Good working knowledge of PC/windows functionality.
  • Required to work from home as a remote coder
