Freelance refers to somebody who is self-employed and is not committed to a particular employer long term.  This sounds fascinating! Work, but for myself with no long term commitment! How fun! But is it really all it is cracked up to be?  My guess is that it would be a very pressure intense experience, how am I going to pay my bills, what if I can’t find a freelance position?
