I've found the same thing. I started out trying to provide a huge range of business services to any client that would have me. All I ended up with was confusing marketing campaigns that didn't get me anywhere. I've since reduced my scope to concentrating on building websites for small businesses and community organisations. I've already seen an increase in return from marketing campaigns and am looking to further streamline.
It's a good lesson. Subject matter experts tend to be in higher demand and can attract a better fee than generalists. Starting out as a generalist is OK if you are not sure where you want to specialise but a key goal must be to narrow your focus and concentrate on your key strengths.
Find your niche and own it.

Great post! I think knowing who your ideal client is and marketing specifically to that client is one of the most overlooked concepts for the new entrepreneur. Many think casting a wide net is the way to go, when the opposite is actually true. Thanks for a good post. Love the picture as well.

looking for freelance work?
I found an interesting way to get freelance work online. Its very easy!
By joining reliablefreelancer as a freelance PROVIDER you can get your freelance projects for free.
No joining fees,no monthly fees.No commision for this site as most of the freelancing sites charges a huge amount as commision and membership fee.
Once after You join this site, you will be able to browse through all projects which are available for freelancers.
you can place your bid amount for each project and communicate with the clients through project message board.
The client will choose you for the project and you will get his contact details in your email for the furthur development.
For secure payment and making sure that the client will pay you,Reliablefreelancer is providing an escrow system.

Its recommended to use the escrow system provided in the site for secure payments.

You can request an escrow from the client before starting the work. Both you and the client can see the money in both of your accounts.Once the project is finished, the client will release the payment to your account. If the project is incomplete, the you have to release the payment back to client.Hence both of you have the control over the project amount and we can make sure you will definitely get paid for your work.

Tips for getting projects:

These are Important things to do while creating the provider account:

1) Try to mark all the areas which are familiar to you.eg:php, ecommerce etc
2) Write a description about you and your service in the profile.
3) Try to put your previous works links in the profile
4) Try to upload a logo if you are a web development company.

All these things will help the clients to assess the freelancers.
And this will help the freelancers to get their projects.

Hope i had provided a valuable information

Thanks
